I think of the image as a laborer in times of war, requisitioning his tools of production to build weapons. You must love the creation of images as a tool of power because I remain convinced that art can change the world.

Biography

Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil is convinced that art can transport us into the past or the future by virtue of its unique capacity to reveal the invisible and the unknown. Through an artistic practice centered around photography, video, installation, and immersive experiences, he focuses his reflections around the production and destruction of images, critically questioning the role that communication technologies and power structures play in diffusing different realities through visual messages.

Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil often manipulates images – whether already existing or produced by him – deconstructing the reality represented in them and extracting new meanings. In his series Le tourbillon de la vie he recontextualizes family photos by cutting out the shape of individuals or elements from the landscape to fill them with black starry skies, creating ambivalent and dreamlike images that remind to Leon Spilliaert’s paintings, where the phantasmagoric characters and the environment play a game of shadows and apparitions, quietude and dramatism.

Like the conceptual artist Douglas Huebler, he questions the capacity of art to break the physical limits of time, and reflects on dichotomies like reality and fiction, memory and forgetfulness.
