The Art Pledge

FAQ

  1. How is the selection of galleries and artists made?
  2. The Art Pledge makes a curatorial selection of prominent and committed international galleries around the world. They are also approached because they represent contemporary artists known for their social or environmental sensibility, either visible in their art, or just as a personal engagement. Then each recommended artist is approached individually by the gallery to decide if they want to join, and if so, on which causes to support. This is also why you’ll find only individually committed artists on our platform, representing just a part of every gallery roster.

  3. How can I judge the quality of artists, artworks and if their prices are justified?
  4. We make the pledge to give you a unique access to the most meaningful way to assess the quality of the art we propose: artist’s institutional visibility worldwide. You’ll not only see where the artist has shown their work and is collected, in terms of geography and institutions, but with our Artfacts partnership, you’ll have a sense of their career trend at first glance. This is more powerful than any other way to assess an artist's potential in our view. Because meaning builds visibility, which builds fame, which builds heritage. Auction prices on the other hand are the consequence of either short term speculation or longer term institutional recognition.

  5. How are the connections made between artists, UN goals, NGO projects, and artworks?
  6. We have a close look at the oeuvre of every artist and suggest UN goals connected to the themes within it. Through their gallery, the artist confirms or modifies the UN goals they finally want to support. Every NGO project has fields of action which allow us to connect them to the 17 UN goals. By default, every artwork has the UN goals of the artist, but can also have a specific focus on a cause that the editing team will then outline.

  7. Who makes the 10% donation to NGOs? Who chooses the NGO?
  8. Either the artist or their gallery will make the donation and will consequently be the ones receiving the potential tax receipt. You make life better together by being the one choosing the NGO project benefiting from the donation during your purchase.

  9. How are the NGO projects selected?
  10. NGO projects join The Art Pledge in 3 ways:

    1. They are partnered with our 2 global platforms (GlobalGiving for the USA & UK and TGE for Europe), offering us more than 7000 projects in 175 countries worldwide.
    2. They are recommended by our galleries or artists, because of individual long term relationships or because of a specific situation locally.
    3. The Art Pledge can build ad hoc partnerships with institutions and NGOs.
  11. Why do I sometimes have a limited choice of NGOs in the purchasing tunnel?
  12. There are two reasons why there can be a more limited choice of NGOs once you’re in the purchasing tunnel:

    • an artist or gallery wants to support a specific selection of NGOs (that they have been working with in the past for example);
    • In order for the gallery to receive a receipt for their donation, they can select the NGO partners that will allow this for their fiscal region, namely Global Giving for the US and UK, and Transnational Giving Europe for certain European countries.

You will therefore be able to select projects that fall within these conditions.

  13. How can I be sure the 10% artwork value goes to my selected NGO project?
  14. Every month, we check with our partner NGOs that donations have been made. Unless you decline, we will also maintain the artwork you bought on The Art Pledge platform, along with your chosen NGO project, as a testimony to what your purchase has supported.

  15. Why can’t I buy the artwork directly in some cases, and have to go through “Contact us” instead?
  16. For 2 main reasons:

    • Due to their geography, some galleries can’t access our instant payment solution, Stripe, or do not wish to use it.
    • Some galleries may give us price brackets for some artworks, as they would like to know who is interested before making a sale decision with their artists. Building an artist career includes building a meaningful roster of international collections, both public and private. The Art Pledge will then ask you a couple of simple questions (“Why are you interested in this artist and artwork?”, “Could you tell us more about your collection?”...) so that we can advocate your interest to the gallery and hopefully finalize the sale for you.
  17. Do I have everything counted in the price when going to checkout?
  18. We try to offer the most complete price possible, including the artwork, shipping instant quotes with ARTA, and finally, something quite new on platforms, the import tax and duties estimate, with Avalara (paid through the shipper when delivered to you). You know everything when you buy!

  19. Could I pay by installments?
  20. You can with Klarna, when activated by our partner galleries. Klarna is available in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the UK, and USA (as of May 2022). Pay later and Financing may be subject to different conditions depending on your country, and subject to credit approval.

  21. Why can’t I have an instant quote on shipping sometimes?
  22. Our partner ARTA has an extensive network of shipping solutions all around the world. Some geographies may not be covered yet, be it the gallery’s or yours. In this case, either ARTA or our partner gallery will be happy to make a custom shipping quote for you.

  23. Why and how do you calculate CO2 emissions? How do you choose the NGO projects benefiting from the CO2 offset?
  24. As the first art x cause platform, we try to do good A to Z: this is why we are proud to be the first art platform to instantly measure CO2 emissions depending on the transport chosen. We are using The Carbon Accounting Company’s method, and benefiting from ARTA’s shipping experience, in order to give you a sense of the CO2 emissions at stake with your artwork shipping, and clearly encourage you switching from air to sea with the brand new routes to be offered by ARTA by the end of 2022. Did you know that choosing sea shipments rather than air is up to 30 times less CO2 emitting? With just 3 to 4 weeks additional delivery time and often at lower cost to you, isn’t it worth it? Whatever your final shipping choice with ARTA is, we will offset the emitted CO2 by donating to a primary forest protection NGO project in the region where your chosen NGO project is. This will be done at the highest CO2 per ton standards, which are currently the EU’s at 80€/ton.

  25. What is this AML check for artworks above 10,000€?
  26. AML stands for Anti Money Laundering. With our partner Arcarta, we comply with new UK/EU AML regulations, while making the entire process as smooth and secure as possible for you, the gallery, and us. It will take you just 5 minutes after checkout, and it will also be a matter of minutes before the process confirms clearance and then the sale. In case of any issue, we’ll come back to you within 2 working days.

  27. What if I change my mind after purchasing?
  28. European customers have a 14 day right of withdrawal from their order. In this case, you need to send the artwork back into its original crate, at your own cost, in a shipping option validated by the gallery. For more information, please refer to the Terms and conditions.

  29. Am I going to have an invoice from the gallery too?
  30. Absolutely: not only will you receive a payment confirmation from us when your order is completed, but our partner gallery will invoice you for your purchased artwork, acknowledging the 10% NGO project donation too. As we work with the most renowned galleries around the world, this is your best guarantee for your beloved artwork.
