I am thinking of art as a space of experience, it’s the only way I can discuss this. What I feel is that when we do art we are necessarily thinking about the moment in which we are living, and of course, art needs to talk about it, but I don’t think art needs to use the terms that are connected to the real world.

Biography

Favoring the use of humble materials such as wood, concrete and paperboard, Ana Mazzei’s multifaceted approach to installation is at the core of her theatrical and rather surrealist environments. Her work questions human interactions in a specific setting: how our bodies transform architecture and how we inhabit a given space.

Mazzei proudly nourishes her practice from local sources of Brazilian art history, specifically the Neo-Concrete movement that gathered artists such as Lygia Clark among others. Her installations often work as architectures or fictional realities where the visitor is invited to have an active participation – even if it’s just as a mere witness – so as to awaken his senses. Like Oiticica, Mazzei seeked to establish a link with the world based on feelings, sensations –phenomenology– and not only through rational thinking.

The aesthetic and material qualities of Ana Mazzei’s body of work connects her practice to multiple international traditions, especially to Russian Constructivism, from where she borrows the simplification and geometrization of shapes for her sculptures and her taste for architecture.
