About this artwork
Ana Mazzei often recycles scraps of wood of Brazilian origin, adding thin layers of paint, varnish and wax pigmentations. This work revolves around the idea of remnants, recalling in particular the frescoes at Pompeii, connected to her exhibition Vesuvius (2020) at Galeria Jaqueline Martins, where she managed to turn ordinary objects and discarded material into dreamscapes with enigmatic meanings.
Her constructions often appropriate procedures used in the theater, both aesthetically and conceptually. This theatrical quality, with things arranged like props, suggests a kind of unknown ritual in which the spectator is a participant. She creates scenarios and settings – installations, stages, playwrights – all of which have been shifted away from their most obvious function.
