About this artwork

Brazilian artist Anna Mazzei is known for her curved and angular sculptures, which explore the relationships among space, dimension, and human perception. In her body of work Studies for Ghosts, Mazzei investigates these themes through the medium of painting, and how differently her two-dimensional works engage the viewer in contrast to her objects.

Her constructions often appropriate procedures used in the theater, both aesthetically and conceptually. This theatrical quality, with things arranged like props, suggests a kind of unknown
ritual in which the spectator is a participant. She creates scenarios and settings – installations, stages, playwrights – all of which have been shifted away from their most obvious function.
