About this artwork

Many living and non-living "characters" populate Ana Mazzei's imagery, as if they were pieces and fragments of a crooked narrative. The totemic and archetypal quality of her quasi-Minimalist objects sometimes calls to the possibility of activation that may serve yet-unknown ends.

Her constructions often appropriate procedures used in the theater, both aesthetically and conceptually. This theatrical quality, with things arranged like props, suggests a kind of unknown ritual in which the spectator is a participant. She creates scenarios and settings – installations, stages, playwrights – all of which have been shifted away from their most obvious function.
