I’ve always been interested in developing scenarios that test the limits of our imagination, that show how it’s constructed and controlled.
Biography
Inspired by her upbringing in the former Soviet Union, Eva Koťátková's work explores how ideologies and different sets of rules are interpreted by individuals. Using constrictive installations to signify the oppression exerted over people by power structures such as political systems, clinics and other institutions “tending to structure” or give shape to our way of thinking, Koťátková reflects on the discrepancy between ideas and their execution in real life. Her kafkaesque installations, assemblages, films, collaborative workshops and collages put viewers ill-at-ease, urging them to think about populations that can’t quite follow society’s guidelines and tend to be secluded in confined spaces.
Also exploring women’s condition, Koťátková’s use of multiple materials like textiles and found objects mirrors Annette Messager’s installations. The latter’s work also dwells on women’s seclusion in our current times and questions social conventions.
To fully grasp Koťátková’s work, one has to bear in mind the huge role Samuel Beckett’s “theatre of the absurd” has played. Senseless movements and absurd dialogues are often part of the artist’s performances, furthering her exploration on the human condition.
