I feel that the experience of making art transforms the way I perceive the world. And my job is simply to work and let these paths draw themselves, without locking the process with my own neuroses.
Biography
França's work engages in schizo and metonymical rearrangements of images and objects, in both individual and collaborative practices. In his oeuvre, his daily experience is introduced through objects, images and videos that challenge the viewer to encounter something excessive and unclassifiable. By tearing, crumpling, blotting, gluing, breaking, and staining, he investigates ways to evoke a place of murmur and indetermination, positivating processes of dismantling and destruction.
He experiments with notions that in other fields are identified as montage and performativity. In a nod to the neo-dadaist tradition, such as the practices from Robert Rauschenberg, França juxtaposes disparate parts and visual elements in processes that accumulate with the passage of time – objects, video excerpts, layers of paint – sequences and gestures made in quick decisions that cannot be corrected or reversed, resulting in complex installational systems.
His close relation to theater scenography and stage acting is consonant to the artistic inventions of Loïe Fuller, in a manner of bringing theatrical technological components and motion outside of its environment and thus to a broader public.
