About this artwork

The artwork title refers literally to a circus arena. Each freestanding sculpture seems to embody the role of character and spectator at once – it can feel as if you've been caught in the middle of a stand-off or have been transported to a stage.

Ana Mazzei's constructions often appropriate procedures used in the theater, both aesthetically and conceptually. This theatrical quality, with things arranged like props, suggests a kind of unknown ritual in which the spectator is a participant. She creates scenarios and settings – installations, stages, playwrights – all of which have been shifted away from their most obvious function.
