About this artwork

A blue shirt hangs stiffly on a standing hanger, almost two dimensional except for the black breast cups protruding from the top. The cartoonish piece of clothing echoes Ana Mazzeis's totemic sculptures, which break the boundaries of artwork versus plinth, becoming a character on their own. The piece is playful in its proportions and feels highly performative exuding a feminine presence. Omission and ambiguity leave an opening for the viewer’s subjectivity. Her constructions often appropriate procedures used in the theater, both aesthetically and conceptually. This theatrical quality, with things arranged like props, suggests a kind of unknown ritual in which the spectator is a participant. Mazzei takes the image of a shirt, an item which is part of the most polluting industry in the world, repositioning it in a completely different function.
