I’m interested in exploring what we consider as waste, the things we discard, the things we toss away and supposedly don’t have any value. I like to transform the idea of trash into something relative, and think about the value we give to other things.

Biography

Diego Bianchi is an artist working with discarded materials and objects he finds in the streets of Buenos Aires, his playground. Whilst transforming artifacts from the urban landscape into artworks, he explores our societies cycles of use and examines the waste’s value.

Trash is seen with new eyes as it is turned into components for his installations echoing Kurt Schwitters' life work, merzbau. The latter created a construction equated to a cathedral melding fragments of trash and found objects that gradually expanded creating a massive installation. For his part Bianchi metamorphoses white cubes into true merzbau in which chaos reigns.

Bianchi’s interest in matter and human imprints connects him with Spanish painter Antoni Tàpies who in the 1950s described his compositions as “battlefields”, referencing the Spanish Civil War and World War II. Destruction and fragmented futures are evoked by both artists, whether it is through bellicose conflict or through derelict environments, objects are compelling sources narrating our passage on Earth.
