I saw a picture of a house in Palestine which was destroyed during a suicide attack. The image showed this rubble of concrete, because the victims couldn’t be shown. I thought this was a kind of symbol for the biggest impact of violence.

Biography

Concrete is not an easy material to control, but artist Christoph Weber has chosen to build his artistic practice around it to unveil its surprisingly fragile nature. If we look at most modern cities, concrete is used to build bridges and infrastructure, transmitting with it an idea of stability accompanied by power. Weber choses to show us cracked structures, fragmented chunks of concrete so as to show that if a material as “violent” and brutal as this can break, so can power structures.

But Weber also investigates the properties of geometric objects, taking a slight distance from the corporeal sphere and pointing towards mental states, mental disciplines such as philosophy. Through this prism, his work and that of Nobuo Sekine are compatible, for they delve on the transformative nature of space and time.

Weber’s interest in forms links him to Paul Cézanne’s work, geometry being a primary question for the artists: observation and deconstruction of forms is always at the core of their aesthetic process.
