About this artwork
This photograph is process-related to Christoph Weber's installation "Untitled (Ramponeau)" (2008). In the homonymous street in the district of Belleville, a cobblestone was meticulously extracted from the pavement. It served both as mold and conceptual backbone for numerous papier-mâché cobblestone-like objects arranged in groups on the floor. At rue Ramponeau stood the last barricade of the Paris Commune of 1871, and its cobblestones were used as defense walls and weapons.
A historical and socio-political discourse is negotiated. It becomes clearer when we learn that the material of choice, the papier-mâché, is made exclusively from books published before the revolutionary year. Christoph Weber reflects here on the ambivalent position between the idea of an object in context to the surrounding space. [based on the text by Fiona Liewehr]
