I am not directly concerned with ecological issues, although they come into my work. I’m more interested in how natural systems are approaching an end point and how successful societies tend toward self-destruction. […] Industrial sites and materials are anachronistic and affect, infect, or change the present landscape and population both physically and psychologically.
Biography
Katinka Bock’s sculptures and installations result from an experience connected to a specific place, exploring transitions and limits of social, historical, and political spaces. By using simple materials like clay, wood, and metal, she examines the transformation of materials throughout time, under natural processes and artificial human interventions.
The way Katinka Bock perceives the sculpture within the environment makes it to some extent in-situ. Similar in concept to Walter De Maria, but on a smaller scale and going further into the context, Bock treats sculpture as an essential element of the space. Drawing inspiration from the history of the community and the place - as in Logbook, Bock creates an interdependence between sculptures and their surroundings. She implements notions of Urbanism by considering history, context, and how people interact with the given environment.
The artist’s occasional use of found objects links her artistic practice to Dadaism movement, and Francis Picabia particularly, who in a similar way used to combine traditional mediums with ready-mades.
