About this artwork
Alexandra Sukhareva first started experimenting with chlorine in 2008/2009. This artwork is typical of her oeuvre, and it is not a painting per se; it rather acts like a painting, remaining a burnt object at its core. The traces, left by chlorine, corrode the canvas and become a “recording of experiences”. When chlorine touches the fabric of the canvas, a corrosive effect occurs. This burn is essentially a trace, which, according to the artist, is a record of an auto-reproduction. The act of burning records itself - the fact of its inevitable traumatic existence.
Chlorine is the closest relative of the toxic substances of modernism. On a large scale, chlorine gas began to be used during World War I. For the first time it became a sign of "an obsession with the idea of cleanliness", which later, in the 20th century, will turn into a nightmare, in order to later turn into a means associated with the production of comfort – a cleaning supply.
Alexandra Sukhareva’s artworks represent impressions from objects and events through the consistent analysis and documentation of their meaning, mediated by multi-component artistic metaphors. Her installations investigate the phenomenology of objects and processes from both scientific and empirical perspectives as well as notions of memory and experience.
