I believe that my work points in several directions and produces important questions regarding the relations of contemporary work with the art circuit, its conceptual dimension, and its role as an action of resistance against the framework of a cultural capitalism that insinuates itself into the art field at any price, instrumentalizing it.

Biography

Ricardo Basbaum is an artist and writer whose artistic practice relies on communities and follows his own vocabulary. Utilizing methods of diagrams, choreographies, games, exercises, he generates public participation through “collective conversations”. He created the form NBP (New Basis Personality) a framework of connections forming a basis of sociological projects exploring communication strategies of different sections of society for example education centres, youth clubs, retirement homes, domestic worker’s unions.

Basbaum’s highly conceptual practice relies on events, like Happenings during the 1960s in America. The importance of visitor reactions incited by art in a participatory, performative environment can be related to Hélio Oiticicia’s artistic practice.

He forms part of a generation of artists who created in a time of political renewal marking the end of the military dictatorship and introducing ultra liberalism to Brazil’s economic system. Similar to Guillaume Deslile and the Age of Discovery, Basbaum is an explorer who restructures and records his reflections of space in cartographical renditions of cities.
