About this artwork

The title is translated as “My uncle Zoylo at 95 years old”. This portrait of the old man both intimidates and triggers compassion at the same time as the traces of ages and life-long labor are seen clearly on his face. Juan Carlos Alom writes on this website, “I have delivered myself to light, shadows and to those details that, however minimal they may seem, have made me tremble and convert them into images…”

One of the most outstanding Cuban artists in the fields of photography, documentary and experimental filmmaking, Juan Carlos Alom was recognized by the Time Magazine in 2000 as one of the 100 Latin American photographers of the millennium.
