Before I paint I do not think. Only after I have drawn do I try to understand what I have drawn.
Biography
Highlighting Arab culture within Israel while also critiquing controversial aspects of her culture such as its most radical views on women, Aysha E. Arar personifies the complexity of the Israelo-Palestinian conflict. Working with a variety of mediums ranging from painting, music, video, performance and even poetry, Arar blends together traditional Palestinian tales with contemporary topics.
Behind her amorphous creatures we detect political themes such as women’s representation and rights, as well as other subjects like the relation between men and women. Her austere aesthetics bring her close to outsider art which is not insignificant as she works closely with people with special needs.
Although her work is much more abstract and simple, it evokes Odilon Redon’s paintings as they both depict monsters or hybrid creatures, exploring the unconscious and our innermost feelings.
