About this artwork
A long stretch of deep blue cotton hung on the wall is covered in large strokes of pastel colors, depicting a creature emerging from a cocoon, as the title of the artwork evokes. The canvas could remind us of a headscarf that the artist dons, creating another parallel to the title of the work, like a form of safe space for her.
Aysha E. Arar, working in a sort of art brut style, evokes a naivety that makes her oeuvre that much more impactful considering the topics she covers. In the complex context of being an Arab woman in Israel, she doesn’t stray away from topics such as gender equality and human rights. The headscarf is an outward symbol of her intermixed identities and she unashamedly brings it to light in her oeuvre.
