About this artwork
A large hand emerges from the canvas, with claw-like nails painted black and red. Fluid shapes colored in a Juan Miró fashion cover the rest of the space. The artist, having stated that her interpretation of her art comes only after its completion, offers a physical manifestation of her inner psyche for the viewer to relate or distance themselves to.
Aysha E. Arar, working in a sort of art brut style, evokes a naivety that makes her oeuvre that much more impactful considering the topics she covers. In the complex context of being an Arab woman in Israel, she doesn’t stray away from topics such as gender equality and human rights. The headscarf is an outward symbol of her intermixed identities and she unashamedly brings it to light in her oeuvre.
