About this artwork

Scattered creatures, organic and artificial figures populate this painting. Humanoid characters on the right and left of the canvas transform into something else completely. With the addition of pop elements such as an upside down smiley face and Goldfish (one even having its head covered with a headscarf), Aysha E. Arar combines the elements that make contemporary life.

Aysha E. Arar, working in a sort of art brut style, evokes a naivety that makes her oeuvre that much more impactful considering the topics she covers. In the complex context of being an Arab woman in Israel, she doesn’t stray away from topics such as gender equality and human rights. The headscarf is an outward symbol of her intermixed identities and she unashamedly brings it to light in her oeuvre.
