I think it’s important to also reconsider the place of the body and sensation and feelings, especially in this day and age as we are moving so far away from it. And I think also because we are oversaturated with visual imagery, everything is so fast, and so sound can be used as a very potent tool to cut through it.

Biography

Through her sculptures, performances and installations, artist Naama Tsabar explores the symbiosis between sound and the human body. By repurposing musical instruments, she stages scenarios where all her performers are on an equal footing. For each of her performances, she chooses to work exclusively with gender fluid or female musicians, signaling the gender gap that exists in the music industry while simultaneously alluding to power structures.

Tsabar has a unique connexion with felt and uses it regularly to build her sculptures. To her, the material has a special place in art history as Joseph Beuys used it frequently in his sculptures. The material conveys warmth and it easily adapts to other bodies, making it an ideal tool to signify that everything is subjected to change.

Furthermore, her interest in sound and fine art conjures associations with Gustav Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze. Considered in its time as a total work of art, Klimt’s piece and Tsabar’s body of work share their comprehensive approach towards art, combining music and other disciplines together.
