About this artwork

A leafless tree serves as a refuge for animals of diverse species in this work by Mark Dion; they cohabit without apparent hierarchy or visible threat to their balance. The drawing, evocative of a page from an explorer’s or scientist’s sketchbook, borrows from the tradition of classificatory diagrams used by scientists to explain the evolution of species. The nonhierarchical organization of Mark Dion’s proposition stands on the commensurate value borne by the different species that inhabit our planet and regulate natural environments.

Tree of Life (2021) is one of the drawings created by Mark Dion during the COVID 19 lockdown period in 2020, and exhibited during his most recent exhibition Retour à l’école at In Situ - fabienne leclerc. The drawing represents the artist’s ongoing concerns about the current biodiversity crisis, and his permanent interest in the notion of extinction.
