About this artwork

Divided by a blooming cherry tree, two samurais proudly wield their katanas. The background is utterly black transmitting a sullen feel contrasting with the pink petals. Known as masculine and strong figures, samurais have been often depicted with their armors; however, in this scene, Rocío García chooses to strip them from their uniforms and shows them naked, depriving them from their rank and challenging thus overly masculine figures.

Rocío García’s oeuvre centers around power and our proneness to abuse it, by examining masculinity and homoeroticism, she lays bare the inherent fragility of virile attitudes.
