It’s possible to read, for example, many of the apocalyptic scenes I’ve drawn, with cities falling apart, as ecological or political fables that echo current anxieties about our future.

Biography

Vidya Gastaldon works with duality: light and darkness, black and white, evil and good, “high” and “low” art, all in an effort to erase the boundaries separating themes and genres. Although the majority of her work is drawing based, she also uses installation, acrylic on canvas, wool and other techniques to give shape to her thoughts. Her work can be qualified as a medley of beliefs and aesthetics, as she takes inspiration from Indian mythology, Aztec myths, encompassing it with yoga, meditation, gardening, and pop culture references. She fuses different elements together and creates an harmonious pictorial universe where forces cohabit.

The latter’s psychedelic visions link her with New Age trends and surrealist paintings such as Salvador Dali’s drifting clocks.

Through her practice, she aspires to touch upon spiritual realms that go beyond our field of vision exploring our psyche and other metaphysical states. Hilma af Klint’s visual language, with her geometric shapes and vivid colors, were certainly an inspiration for the artist.
