About this artwork
With her characteristic humor, Vidya Gastaldon delivers a defiant female nude that is intended to serve as a scarecrow. Hairy legs, a muscular figure and pubic hair transmuting into a bird incarnate a powerful female figure emancipated from the male gaze. Citing Robert Crumb’s drawings of voluptuous women, Gastaldon pays homage to the cartoonist while considering representation of women throughout art history.
Presented at the exhibition Objets peints au feu de bois in Art: Concept, this work is a mixture of sacred, sensual, tongue-in-cheek and a provocative narrative. Allergic to any attempt to control and restrain her universe, she delivers a cosmic overview combining Hindi divinities, Muppet-Show characters, por culture symbols and Christian references.
