I look a lot at movies or things with women. For me it's a way of saying something about myself, so I can project myself into them.

Biography

Nina Childress, born in 1961 in Pasadena, California, is a celebrated French painter known for her dynamic evolution and diverse styles. Originally Nina Kuss, she was a muse for the punk band Lucrate Milk and a member of the street artist collective Les Frères Ripoulin. Since 1983, her work has explored abstraction, hyperrealism, and introspective self-portraits, characterized by a candid energy that blends humor and provocation.

Childress’s paintings often feature fluorescent pigments and reinterpret Western portraiture, engaging with stereotypes of female representation. Her subjects include cultural icons like Sylvie Vartan, Kate Bush, and Hedy Lamarr, with whom she created her first bronze statue in 2020. Describing her practice as “conceptual and dumb,” Childress defies boundaries and continues to innovate within her artistic exploration. She earned a Master of Fine Arts in 2006 and remains a pivotal figure in contemporary art.
