About this artwork
Ricardo Basbaum is an engaged artist who denounces the lack of freedom of expression during Brazilian military dictatorship from the 70s and 80s. A simple and reproducible pictogram of an eye marked the artist's participation in the Brazilian art history-defining exhibition “How are you, Generation 80?” (Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro, 1984). The 'Eye mark' permeated his practice until approximately 1990, glued or painted over objects, images and architecture.
Besides producing an effect of demarcation and anthropomorphization of objects and images, the 'Eye mark' mainly provokes a perceptual reversibility, transforming things into agents and, torn from their indifference, make them observe us – a stern referral to the persecution and censorship during the military junta.
