What if we would understand photography as a form of divination, where images are presented in such a way that they can be felt as important signs to be interpreted, as a sort of forecast?
Biography
Deserted landscapes with decaying architecture foretell man’s imminent demise in Geert Goiris photographs. His body of work explores uncanny spaces devoid–more often than not–of any human presence; his shots take us to striking territories where time stops, they are invitations to gather our thoughts together and consider where we are headed. His photographs are taken with digital cameras but he never retouches them, he prefers to play with light and the architecture surrounding him.
Goiris shares his inclination for void and empty spaces with photographer Harry Gruyaert. Although the latter has a clear preference for color, they both play with scales and position the viewer so as to make them feel the vastness and emptiness of the world, transporting them into dreamlike landscapes that will possibly outlive us.
The desolation manifested in his work links him with Roger Fenton photographs, especially his work on the Crimean War whereby a bare topography likens the scene to martian imagery. There’s no way to determine a timeline, making Fenton and Goiris' photographs timeless.
