About this artwork

Superimposing a picture showing three defenseless individuals and the corpse of a raven, Dead Picture by Geert Goiris re-examines still lifes and the catastrophes surrounding us. A contemporary memento mori, the photograph urges us to be more empathetic towards others and more appreciative of life. Rather than a bleak composition, the picture celebrates life and its cycles by blatantly showing death and misery.

Geert Goiris travels the world, seeking out unusual places and interpreting them in enigmatic images. Despite the high resolution afforded by his large-format film camera, his images don’t overwhelm us with definitive information. They are intentionally unpinned from a specific era, giving the feeling that we could be simultaneously looking at the past and the future.
