About this artwork

Nine figures are standing and sitting in formation, looking straight ahead. We can guess their figure through the use of negative space, the rest of the work being covered in wild patches of watercolor and colored pencils. The highly energetic result still provides a sense of calmness from the aura of the individuals, that seem like they are glowing from within. Working from photographs and creating a reproduction of them in a “soft” medium like watercolor, Martin Dammann provides a new vision of a scene, hazy and inquisitive. He questions the context of the original photo, and the subjects within it. Often working with WWII photographs of soldiers on their time off, Dammann also interrogates what masculinity and identity mean, and how we construct them.
