About this artwork
The title of this artwork by Martin Damman translates as butterfly, probably alluding to the stains surrounding the figure. Ripples around the main figure show the artist’s dexterity with watercolor and give it a spectral appearance.
Presented during the exhibition Zeichnung in the In Situ/Fabienne Leclerc gallery, the title highlights the artist’s interest in creating a dialogue between abstraction and form. Seemingly the artist revisitis war photography–the main character is wearing a military uniform–enabling us to position this artwork in the continuity of his quest in historical records. But while still connected to this, this watercolor is detached from other works as what it depicts is less discernible making it at the crossroads of two different genres: portrait and abstraction.
