About this artwork

A face, with its mouth open and a neutral expression, stares at us through piercing light blue eyes. The genderless figure’s hair is decorated with ornate multicolored jewels, cascading down their head. The recurrent portraits in We Are The Painters’ oeuvre carry close ties with nature, eventually evolving into abstract landscapes and mountainous views. The ambiguous nature of the individual contributes to the feeling of universalism and diversity, potentially paying homage to cultures further removed from some of us. Evoking Picasso’s multiple portraits of Dora Maar or Matisse’s Woman with hat, this painting pays homage to the legacy of art history while contributing to its renewal. The duo's work revolves around the medium of painting; however, they also experiment with installations, sculpture and found objects.
