About this artwork
"The Dream of Scipio" refers explicitly to an allegory in Cicero's "De re publica" in which the cosmic organization of the world is revealed to the author by a dream. The artist's piece establishes a relationship with a still life or a landscape, minimal, without depth or relief in a delicate composition that is ambiguously ordered and chaotic. A poetic and, at the same time, surprisingly playful take on the perception of the volume and movement.
Francisco Tropa establishes a perennial dialogue between the old and the contemporary, between archaeology and art. The artist conveys different techniques to achieve intervariable works that are part of bigger cycles and installation settings. Tropa produces powerful, timeless images that create very allegorical situations that seem to use a forgotten language of form, but which require the spectator to have an endless web of interpretation in order to find a meaning that is always hidden, always beyond what we see.
