About this artwork
The application of black and white photography on the surface of the silk screen prints makes this work a unique piece. The depicted vessel symbolizes not only notions of duality, yin and yang but also an awareness of ancestrality in sculpture. The photographs are posed as mirrored positive and negative copies, thus presenting a reflection on memory and time.
Francisco Tropa establishes a perennial dialogue between the old and the contemporary, between archaeology and art. The artist conveys different techniques to achieve intervariable works that are part of bigger cycles and installation settings. Tropa produces powerful, timeless images that create very allegorical situations that seem to use a forgotten language of form, but which require the spectator to have an endless web of interpretation in order to find a meaning that is always hidden, always beyond what we see.
