About this artwork

In this painting by Adriana Ciudad, the artist depicts a scene of profound tranquility and isolation. A figure drifts away on a small embarkation, while in the distance the palm trees on an island sway aggressively in the wind. The body of water below the boat becomes at once a source of calm reassurance, and a leap into the depth of nothingness, the latter reinforced by a splatter of white star-like dots. The person’s aura warmly envelops them, a shield against the elements. The ocean, full of life and after-life, is thus a contradictory refuge. Adriana Ciudad encourages its viewer to consider reconnecting with it, and thus themselves.
