I don’t think one can stay away from politics. I think whatever you do, whatever position you take, it’s always political in some ways.

Biography

Uriel Orlow’s cross-disciplinary artistic practice explores themes like memory, history, colonialism, marginalized communities and more. Using a variety of mediums such as sound, video, photography, drawing and text, he gives shape to works weaving together past and present temporalities. His working process is research based, enabling him to construct a lasting bond with the communities he visits, and this in turn allows him to create works profoundly intimate.

Orlow’s videos show an affinity with the genre of documentary; however, they are not objective and one-sided pieces but rather works cultivating dialogue. His work is hybrid and like Trinh T. Minh-ha’s films, they assert that language, art and history are always biased.

During the French Revolution, painter Hubert Robert took interest in Roman ruins. Evocative of the destructive power of time, ruins were seen as testimonies of bygone eras and human’s impermanence. As Orlow, Hubert was captivated by “spatial manifestations of memory” and regarded them as humans' imminent fate.
