There is always an event that works with its media formatting. What interests me is to show both: the event and its construction.
Biography
Bruno Serralongue is an “artist-citizen” photographing historic events like the European migrant crisis–especially the Calais Jungle– the Dakota access pipeline protests, militant occupation in Notre-Dame-des-Landes and much more. However, unlike professional photojournalists, he’s not invited to cover these events. and by still assisting, his gaze is, to an extent, uncompromised. Serralongue affirms to be more interested in what happens offscreen than what the camera lets transpire, revealing to his audience another perspective of overly mediatized events. This is why his projects are long-lasting as he develops a true connexion with the people he photographs.
In this sense, Serralongue and Alfredo Jaar can be equated, both being artists concerned by sensational images and the numbness they produce. The two seek to offer to their viewership images far more sensitive than what we can find in newspapers or other media outlets.
Serralongue’s investigative approach bears some resemblance with Théodore Géricault’s thorough journalistic research on the wreckage of a naval ship. After gathering all the information Gericault painted The Raft of the Medusa.
