Biography

Drawing from her Haitian and French heritage, histories and stories of racism, colonialism, and gender-based violence, Gaëlle Choisne has built an artistic practice that can be considered as impactful. Influences from her theater studies can be found within her works, whose storytelling strives to reach its viewers. Creating pieces of the story through sculpture, video, and installation, the artist ties it all together under the banner of memories that tie us with reused and recycled objects.

Gaëlle Choisne inscribes herself in the lineage of committed figures in the fight against racism and for the retelling of history as one that does not ignore the horrors inflicted by those who wrote it in the past. We can thus find the impact that intellectuals such as Aimé Césaire grounded in the 20th century come to life in her artworks.

As far as voices of racialised peoples go, they had little to no place in the public eye, a fact that Choisne nuances in her work. In the past, the representations such as that of Haitian acrobat and art model Joseph by Théodore Géricault in the early 19th century, were very few and far between.
