About this artwork

"The Lambi conch is a shell that was once used by the " marrons ", freed slaves, as a means of communication and rallying to announce Life, Death, Weddings, the yam harvest, the return of fishing, revolts and other popular gatherings. It is a symbol of freedom and independence. I add a chain and the conch becomes an accessory. The meaning becomes double: the chain can be seen as a reminder of a form of resistance when used by the marrons but also as a reminder of the dangers of accessorizing certain causes and struggles that are still relevant today, where everything is constantly being reworked and reinterpreted by the system. Bag Lady is also a tribute to the title of Erykah Badu and Roy Ayres." Gaëlle Choisne
