Biography
In films, photographs, works on paper, sculptures, and installations, Ciprian Mureşan examines the discrepancies between institutionalized historical narratives and everyday experience. Born during Nicolae Ceauşescu’s regime, Mureşan’s artistic practice analyzes the ideological and political shifts that shook Romania and denounces the hypocrisy of both communism and capitalism.
With a prolific body of work that does not comply with any specific genre, his work is similar to Martin Kippenberger’s oeuvre, both having explored sculpture, drawing, painting, and more. Playfulness and subversion are key elements in their projects, placing childhood at the heart of their production and questioning the notion of authenticity in art.
Mureşan’s exploration of power structures goes further by studying the rise of religion in his home country. Systems of belief such as catholicism or political ideologies meet in the same space; it’s not uncommon to find references to economists like Adam Smith or writers like Franz Kafka in his works, grounding him at the intersection of all forms of art.
