About this artwork
As the title indicates, this photograph shows a man playing an improvised instrument. The scene unfolds in the street but the punctum lies in the man’s fingers. As he fiddles with the chords we are brought back to reality and to think about this man’s living conditions.
In 2006, four years after the closure of the refugee camp at Sangatte, in France's Pas-de-Calais département, the French artist Bruno Serralongue visited what is known as the Calais Jungle for the first time. After this first encounter with refugees he began his ongoing documentary series on the life of migrants and refugees in this controversial territory of transit.
