About this artwork
Bruno Serralongue, with his sincere gaze and his commitment toward marginalized communities, especially refugees and migrants, captures the moment where a kite soars over the camp. A fleeting moment of joy for the kids flying the kite that contrasts with the inhuman living conditions in the camp. Through this tearing image, Serralongue denounces their situation and urges the viewer to bring positive change to their lives.
In 2006, four years after the closure of the refugee camp at Sangatte, in France's Pas-de-Calais département, the French artist Bruno Serralongue visited what is known as the Calais Jungle for the first time. After this first encounter with refugees he began his ongoing documentary series on the life of migrants and refugees in this controversial territory of transit.
