If we find happiness and joy in our lives, if we see our burden as valuable, nothing will be too difficult and no obstacle will stop us.
Biography
Pulling from his experience of emigration and the disruptions that emerged from it, Romanian-Israeli artist Belu-Simion Fainaru’s practice covers topics of collective memory and identity, especially in regards to questions of territories. He asks the question: where is a home, and how do we build ourselves in reaction or against it? Working with a wide range of media such as sculpture, drawing, video, and installation, the artist find the nuances and contrasts in the aforementioned contexts, giving a sense of universality to the resulting output.
Fairanu’s commitment to the Jewish community and its history is reminiscent of Marc Chagall’s as well. With many drawings, paintings, stained glass window representations of Jewish symbols such as the menorah or scenes of the exodus, he preserved a colorful and vivid depiction of his heritage.
Also highly influenced by issues of emigration and tensions arising from it, Bruno Serralongue has focused his photographic practice on displaced peoples and their struggles. He has notably covered the Calais Jungle, a stark representation of the European migrant crisis in 2015.
