About this artwork

A figure looks at us with sorrowful eyes, adorned with a red flower in their hair and a large white collar around their neck. With eyebrows raised and black tears spilling from their eyes, the person’s pain is communicative. Frozen in a stained glass structure, the pitiful subject carries a burden that is universal. Light is a powerful theme in Jewish philosophy, and a recurrent source of interest for Belu-Simion Fainaru. It is connected to eternal darkness, or the void that consumes all. Light is therefore at the opposite end of the spectrum, it is presence. The stained glass piece would usually be placed in a spot where light could shine through, giving it new life and projecting it upon others. The poetic work, both nostalgic and hopeful then, reminds the viewer of the duality of a life experienced.
Belu-Simion Fainaru’s work uses a wide range of media, such as sculpture, installation, drawing and video. In some of the objects derived from the ready-made concept in art, the tension is created by disruption of the functionality and by the disconnection from useful purposefulness. Fainaru works in various domains of the visual art, creating three-dimensional works and video through the objects and environments which he designs. While constructing layers of meaning that touch upon Jewish-Romanian history, text, and issues of identity and territory, his works sensitively and deeply address universal human themes. They constitute a complex tapestry of contrasts and contradictions that characterise life, dealing with subjects such as wandering and home, religion and secularity, sanity and madness, memory and forgetting, language and visual art.
