About this artwork
Light bulbs: how many we have seen over the
last few decades! How many instances of fiat
lux! Maybe the first, the most dramatic, certainly
authentically prophetic, is the one painted in
Guernica by Picasso in 1937. And then from the
Capri Battery, 1985, of Beuys in a bricoleur vein, to
the one the foot of the artist crushes, extinguishing
it, in the video Nuance, 2014, by Adel Abdessemed,
by way of the caged ones in Current Disturbance,
1996, by Mona Hatoum.
Here they change with each day of the week,
whose name is written on them. A fiat lux for all
seven days of the creation, as if any creation, in the
end, were simply the light that reveals or blinds us.
And each time it is discomfortingly alone, reduced
only to its function. Yet it makes sense with what
is around it and is illuminated. The sense, then,
of solitude and mere functioning is redeemed by
communion, by being together with other things.
The one has no sense if not in the whole.
