What I try to achieve is what is in between. Between figures and landscape, narrative and structure, between structure and the device used, between image and sound, and so on.

Biography

André Parente is an artist and visual researcher interested in the field of moving images and new media. In 1987 he completed a PhD from University Paris 8 where his doctoral advisor was none other than Gilles Deleuze. Parente’s early work consisted mainly of video, interactive installations and photographs; however, he has been working with textiles and politically charged objects to denounce Brazil’s current political turmoil.

Showing a growing interest for native Brazilian communities, his work aims at exploring the rituals and customs of the Mehinaku community. Fellow artist Cildo Meireles shares his interest for indigenous populations; through their work they strive to open a dialogue between native people from Brazil and the West.

Unsurprisingly, Parente’s work researches movement, time and the way we construct our reality. Like pioneer photographer Eadweard Muybridge, he analyses motion but as it is perceived by individuals, stressing how perception –and thus time– is always subjective and relative, often bridging together the temporality of the artwork and also that of the spectator.
