About this artwork

On one face is Michel Temer, at the time Brazil's vice president that came to power after the coup that impeached elect president Dilma Roussef. On the other side is Eduardo Cunha, the former president of the parliament and one of the main plotters of the coup. Inscribed in Latin is the word temeritatem, which can be translated as recklessness.

The coin “1 Irreal” ("1 Unreal", a pun on Brazilian currency "real") was conceived in May 2016. Parente was inspired by a paraphrase from Helio Oiticica: “Of unreality, we live”. The artwork/coin is literally active: it seeks to activate (every coin has a performative character) the complexity of the relationship between arts and politics. The “Irreal” was released in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Fortaleza, Brasília and Curitiba, always during a conversation with two local artists or curators.
