About this artwork

In 2005, the artist, then in residence in New York, gave life to the Wigs series imagining “braided architectures” on the model of skyscrapers in American cities. He multiplies this corpus, imagining architectural wigs, inspired by monuments of European capitals, car wigs and MAVA wigs (Museum of the art of active life), centered on famous people.

Named after the famous Wright brothers, American pioneers credited for inventing the first motor-operated airplane. Taking the shape of an airplane, the piece, with its braided architecture blends perfectly together Western and African cultures.

Politics and culture go hand in hand for Meschac Gaba, his oeuvre is a juxtaposition of African and Western identities, revealing how colonial power structures continue to wield their hegemony.
