About this artwork

The figure with short curly hair is holding a vase and a bouquet of calla lilies. Calla lily is interpreted by some to represent bisexuality because its structure and appearance evokes both male and female genitalia. Salvador Dali, Ansel Adams, and Robert Mapplethorpe have portrayed the calla lily in their art, often with erotic understone.

Oil pastel is a medium that Helfman labels as “rebellious” and is used to challenge the boundary between genders here. Israeli multi-media artist Michal Helfman revisits history and boundaries, such as frontiers, through sculpture, architecture, video and drawing.
